for our client. This is a hybrid role in Richmond Hill, ON.

Overview:
Our client is seeking an experienced Data Architect to lead the development of a foundational data practice within a dynamic and evolving organizational landscape. This role requires a strategic thinker who excels in navigating ambiguity and bringing clarity, structure, and direction to complex data environments. The successful candidate will establish the architectural and governance frameworks that define how data is managed, secured, and leveraged across the organization. This foundational work will enable the future growth, maturity, and sustainability of the enterprise data ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Design:
- Design and document enterprise-level data models, data flows, and integration patterns for both operational and analytical needs.
- Develop technical specifications and architectural designs for data storage, processing, and access across distributed systems.
- Ensure architectural decisions support scalability, performance optimization, and interoperability.
- Define and enforce standards and best practices for data modeling, transformation, and consumption.
- Provide architectural guidance to technical teams, ensuring alignment with business and technology objectives.
- Lead architectural reviews and design sessions to ensure consistency and quality across initiatives.
Governance & Stewardship:
- Establish and operationalize a data governance framework, including policies, roles, and lifecycle management practices.
- Define and implement data stewardship models with clear accountability for data ownership and maintenance.
- Develop and enforce controls for data access, encryption, and masking to ensure privacy and security.
- Collaborate with information security, privacy, and legal stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Create and maintain metadata standards, classification schemes, and retention policies.
Collaboration & Leadership:
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to IT team members.
- Work with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into architectural solutions.
- Guide data management practices, including retention, archiving, and backup strategies.
- Promote data literacy and best practices through training, documentation, and enablement.
- Support change management through communication planning and stakeholder engagement.
Required Skills & Knowledge:
- Demonstrated experience designing data models, governance frameworks, and standards in complex environments.
- Proven ability to lead initiatives in ambiguous or rapidly evolving organizational contexts.
- Strong understanding of enterprise data modeling (conceptual, logical, and physical), metadata management, and data lifecycle practices.
- Experience designing architectures for operational and analytical workloads.
- Proficiency with Microsoft data technologies (SQL Server, Power BI, Microsoft Purview, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with cloud-based data platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure (data lakes, data factories, storage, analytics services).
- Knowledge of data security and privacy practices, including encryption, masking, and role-based access controls.
- Familiarity with data integration and orchestration tools (Microsoft ecosystem preferred).
- Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to cross-functional teams.
- Skilled in facilitating architectural discussions, design reviews, and governance workshops.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex data concepts into business-friendly language.
- Experience collaborating with legal, compliance, and privacy teams to ensure regulatory alignment.
Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Management, or a related field.
- Certifications in Microsoft Azure, CDMA, TOGAF, or ITIL (preferred).
- Minimum 10 years of experience in data architecture, governance, or enterprise data management roles.
